Several years ago, I read Seth Godin’s book Purple Cow. I love the analogy he makes about cows. There are regular cows, you know, the ones everyone has seen, but since everyone has seen them they are BORING.
Now a purple cow is INTERESTING. No one has seen a purple cow. That is something everyone will remember.
Seth Godin continually expresses ideas about marketing and in his latest book The Icarus Deception he writes about marketing yourself.
“No one cares as much as you. You are the only one who is going to make things happen. No one is going to hand it to you. Think you can hit the 3-pointer? Think you’ve got all the talent in the world and deserve a chance to play? You don’t have to wait for permission anymore. Get out there and show them!”
He continues by asking the question:
How long are you going to wait?
“Once you understand that there are problems waiting to be solved, once you realize that you have all the tools and all the permission you need, then opportunities to contribute abound. Your opportunity is not to have your resume picked from a pile but to lead. No one is going to pick you. Pick yourself.”
Following are a few more of Seth Godin’s entertaining ideas that have been expressed at different conferences through the years.
